Universal Health Coverage Day: Health for All needed in view of COVID-19 global pandemic, says IGP

Unchir, Pauri-Garhwal, Uttarakhand, 12 December 2020: On the occasion of the Universal Health Coverage Day today, the India Greens Party (IGP) called for strong and equitable health systems that left no one behind

In a press statement issued on the occasion, the IGP President Suresh Nautiyal said the governments the world over must work for strong and equitable health systems that left no one behind which meant Health for All!

“It is binding on the governments to ensure universal health coverage as they are signatories to the unanimous UN resolution calling for all nations to provide for their citizens affordable and quality healthcare,” he added.

Universal Health Coverage Day is celebrated annually on December 12 and is promoted by the World Health Organisation (WHO). December 12 is the anniversary of the first unanimous United Nations resolution. The universal health coverage (UHC) ensures all people, everywhere, can get the quality health services they need without financial hardship.

Mr Nautiyal pointed out that the case for universal health coverage is clearer against the backdrop of a global pandemic – COVID-19 — that has claimed millions of lives.

The IGP leader hoped that the International Universal Health Coverage Day will continue to aim at raising awareness of the need for strong and resilient health systems and universal health coverage with multi-stakeholder partners.

He said the people should raise their voices to share the stories of millions of people still waiting for health.

“The governments ought to make bigger and smarter investments in health, and encourage diverse groups to make commitments to help move the world closer to UHC by 2030,” Mr Nautiyal demanded, adding that the sheer scale of COVID-19 crisis has sparked new urgency around health systems and universal health coverage.

The IGP leader said that the party was committed to treat the health and care sector as one of the top priority areas.
