INDIA GREENS PARTY
Press Release
Issued at New Delhi on 18 November 2024
On the occasion of the seventh Foundation Day of the India Greens Party, we extend our heartiest greetings to the people of India.
Today marks yet another milestone in our journey towards building a sustainable and eco-centric future for our nation and our planet.
Founded with the belief that a better future is possible through harmony between humanity and Nature, the India Greens Party stands committed to a vision of governance and society that prioritises the environment, promotes biodiversity, and fosters a lifestyle grounded in sustainability and equity.
A Call for Change
As we celebrate this day, we call upon every citizen of India to reflect on the urgent need for change. The time is ripe to rethink our lifestyles, our activities, and our relationship with the Earth. Our planet is facing unprecedented environmental challenges — climate breakdown due to ever increasing greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity loss, wildlife extinction, waste and pollution crisis and natural resource capture by few corporations — and these crises are no longer distant threats, but present realities that demand immediate action.
We urge the people of India to adopt an ecocentric approach to life — one that places the well-being of the environment, animals, and natural ecosystems at the centre of our decisions. This means reimagining how we live, work, and interact with the world around us.
We strongly urge the Government of India to adopt “systemic changes that integrate ecological economics” into national policy frameworks. Traditional measures of growth, such as GDP, fail to account for the depletion of natural resources, environmental degradation, and the loss of biodiversity.
“To truly measure progress and development, it is essential that we shift to a model that values ecological health and sustainability. This would involve integrating environmental costs into economic calculations, recognising the finite nature of our resources, and ensuring that economic development is not lopsided and achieved at the expense of the environment. A new methodology that emphasises the well-being of communities, equitable distribution of resources, and long-term ecological balance will create a more accurate and holistic picture of national prosperity,” pointed out Mr Kailash Anerao, Co-President of the party.
“To measure growth in a truly sustainable and inclusive way, the government should develop and implement alternative indicators, such as the Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI) or the Human Development Index (HDI), which account for environmental and social factors. These metrics would not only highlight the importance of ecological sustainability but also reflect the quality of life and well-being of citizens, rather than simply economic output. By incorporating such frameworks, India can pave the way for a future where development is redefined to prioritize the planet’s health, social equity, and long-term resilience, ultimately ensuring that progress benefits – both people and millions of other species cohabiting our planet,” Mr Anerao stressed.
Reimagining Our Lifestyles
It is time to shift away from consumption-driven habits and embrace a way of life that values quality over quantity. Let us foster a culture of conservation, where sustainable practices such as reducing waste, conserving water, and minimising our carbon footprint are at the heart of our daily routines.
We encourage each individual, community, and institution to prioritize environmental sustainability in every action—from the food we consume, to the energy we use, to the products we buy. Such changes can have a powerful collective impact. When we respect the Earth and its natural life support systems, we respect ourselves and future generations.
Preserving Biodiversity for Future Generations
The health of our planet’s ecosystems is directly linked to the well-being of its inhabitants, including us. The India Greens Party remains steadfast in its commitment to protect and restore biodiversity. Our forests, oceans, wetlands, and wildlife are not just resources to exploit, but vital partners in sustaining life on Earth.
As we move forward, we promise to advocate for policies that strengthen conservation efforts, create green policies, and promote biodiversity restoration. We envision an India where nature is safeguarded, where endangered species thrive, and where ecological balance is maintained.
A Call for Action
This Foundation Day is not just a moment of celebration, it is a call for action. Let us unite in our collective responsibility to protect the planet and ensure a just, sustainable future for all. The India Greens Party believes that together, through conscious choices, innovative solutions, and unwavering commitment, we can build a resilient India that leads the way in environmental stewardship.
“We are confident that the people of India, with their boundless creativity, strength, and resilience, can rise to this challenge. Let us reimagine our future, not as a distant dream, but as a collective effort, starting today. Together, for a greener, more sustainable, and ecologically balanced India,” emphasised Mr Suresh Nautiyal, Founder of the first pan-India Green party, iGP.
