Int’l Epidemic Preparedness Day: More awareness about Omicron variant BF.7 needed, says iGP

INDIA GREENS PARTY

Press Statement

Unchir-Dunktok, Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, 27 December 2022: The India Greens Party (iGP) today said there is a great need of raising awareness about the new Omicron variant BF.7 of the Covid-19 so that the country is well prepared to respond to the epidemic.

Cases of Omicron variant BF.7 have already been discovered in India. It is considered a triple threat as it is highly transmissible, can reinfect people easily, and can also infect those vaccinated.

In a press statement issued here at the national head office (NHO) of the party, on the on the occasion of the International Day of Epidemic Preparedness today, the party said exchange of information, scientific knowledge and best practices, quality education, and advocacy programmes on epidemics at all levels are urgently required to prevent and respond to epidemics.

The party said there is an urgent need to have resilient and robust health systems, reaching those who are vulnerable or in vulnerable situations.

It is time for the hospitals to re-stock medical supplies, identify isolation areas, and reinforce the Covid-19 appropriate behaviour to deal with likely threats from the new virus variant.

It is worrisome that the global health crises have threatened to overwhelm already overstretched health systems, disrupt global supply chains and cause disproportionate devastation of the livelihoods of people, including women and children, and the economies of the poorest and most vulnerable countries.

It is necessary to strengthen epidemic prevention by applying lessons learned on epidemic management and how to prevent the stoppage of basic services, and to raise the level of preparedness in order to have the earliest and most adequate response to any epidemic that may arise.

The iGP is of the view that the governments must commit to ensure inclusive, equal and non-discriminatory measures, with special attention to those who are vulnerable or in vulnerable situations with the highest chance of epidemic infection.

Statement issued by Suresh Nautiyal, iGP Chief Spokesperson.
