World Teachers’ Day: Need to create Green teachers, says IGP

Unchir, Pauri-Garhwal, Uttarakhand, 5 October 2020: The India Greens Party (IGP) today said there is a great need to create Green teachers to propagate the Green values and philosophy in order to save the humans and other species from the onslaught of global warming and climate change.

In his statement on the occasion of the World Teachers’ Day (WTD) today, the IGP President Suresh Nautiyal said the future will be secure if the societies adopt the Green values in their day-to-day life. “The teachers can contribute immensely to this cause if they are trained in the Green values, principles and philosophy,” Mr Nautiyal added, pointing out that the teachers were the key to the achievement of education.

Held annually on 5 October since 1994, the WTD commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation Concerning the Status of Teachers. The Day is convened in the partnership with UNICEF, the International Labour Organisation and Education International. It also provides the occasion to celebrate the teaching profession worldwide, take stock of achievements, and draw attention to the voices of teachers.

Praising the teachers, Mr Nautiyal said the teachers undoubtedly have worked individually and collectively to find solutions and create new learning environments for their students to allow education to continue.

This year, the Day is celebrating the teachers with the theme “Teachers: Leading in crisis, reimagining the future”. The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly added to the challenges faced by already over-extended education systems throughout the world.
