Press Statement

The India Greens Party (iGP) is of the opinion that any attack on the Gandhian-Nehruvian institutions in the country is not acceptable as it is not good for democracy in the country.

In recent months, the Uttar Pradesh government forcibly occupied the Gandhi Vidya Sansthan (institute of Gandhian studies) in Varanasi to handover it to a central government body. The 61-year-old Sansthan holds informal classes on Gandhian philosophy for anyone interested and brings out some publications. It was founded by the late Jayaprakash Narayan (JP) and others and run by a society.

Only last month on 16 June 2023, the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library Society was renamed as Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library Society. In a special meeting of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library Society, it was resolved to change the name.

It is strange that the Prime Minister religiously visits the Gandhi statues abroad but here in India the Gandhian institutions are being targeted deliberately. It is beyond imagination that the institutions propagating the philosophy of Father of the Nation would get such a shoddy treatment.

The fact is that Gandhi’s contribution is immeasurable. We remain indebted to him. Gandhi tried to bring peace and harmony to India on the one hand, while brought her Independence on the other hand.

For him, the process of change was very important. He reinforced our belief in democracy, ethics, values, equal rights, truth and nonviolence. He taught us the value of Satyagraha. He told us the importance of Sarvodaya, Swaraj and Swadeshi. He introduced us to Trusteeship.

In a nutshell, Gandhi cannot be eliminated from our collective memory and the Indian consciousness. And like Buddha, he is among the best-known names and faces from India, all over the world.

Issued by the iGP Chief Spokesperson Suresh Nautiyal.
