The India Greens Party (iGP) condemns the unsavory incidents that took place in the northeastern state of Manipur; and expresses its pain and anguish over the outrageous incidents in which women were paraded naked, raped, murdered, and properties razed.
It is fine that the Pime Minister Narendra Modi in his long-awaited statement said that his heart was filled with anguish and anger over the horrific video of two women being paraded naked in Manipur, and that the guilty would not be spared; but that was not enough as a statement from him is expected in country’s Parliament.
The guilty need to be brought to justice sooner than later.
The two women were paraded naked by a mob in Manipur on May 4, a day after clashes broke out between the valley-majority Meitei and the hill-majority Kuki tribe in the BJP-ruled state over the Meiteis’ demand for scheduled tribes (ST) status.
It is a sad commentary on the political system of the country that the women were molested and dragged to a field, where they were allegedly gang-raped. It is regrettable that the first arrest was made only after 77 days of the incident, and that too a day after the video went viral. It is disappointing that the incident of naked parade took place at a location just 1-km away from India’s ‘best’ police station.
Over 120 have died in the ethnic violence in Manipur and thousands have been internally displaced and are now living in relief camps.
Last month, the party in a statement had condemned the continuing violence in the northeastern state of Manipur; and, urged the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to break his silence and put an immediate halt to it. It is sad that both the central and state governments are weaponising the constitutional provisions to destroy concepts of democratic dialogue, federalism and safeguarding of human rights.
The iGP would like to say it again that the Manipur state is burning due to the divisive politics. The state government has pretended to be an ally to all the communities for its political gains, but has only widened the gulf of historical tensions between them without any effort to facilitate a dialogue towards resolution of the current crisis.
