INDIA GREENS PARTY
Press Statement
Onchar, Pauri-Garhwal, Uttarakhand, 27 September 2020: The India Greens Party (IGP) has said there is a great need to overcome the threats that the rivers are facing and vigorously defend the rights of those who depend on the rivers.
In a press statement issued here on the occasion of the World Rivers Day (WRD) today, the IGP President Suresh Nautiyal said the rivers have played a critical role in the rise of civilisations and ancient communities.
“Rivers have shaped cultures, traditions, ethos, faiths and history. River advocate Mark Angelo is right in saying that rivers are the arteries of our planet; they are lifelines in the truest sense,” Mr Nautiyal added.
The World Rivers Day (WRD) is celebrated on 4th Sunday every September. It highlights the values of rivers and strives to increase public awareness and encourage the stewardship of rivers around the world.
The United Nations launched the Water for Life Decade in 2005 to create awareness among people to take care of water resources across the globe. Later, World Rivers Day was established after the proposal of Mark Angelo and first World Rivers Day was celebrated in 2005.
“Today, the global warming, climate change and water pollution have threatened the very existence of our rivers. Therefore, we need to overcome the threats that the rivers are facing with the involvement of people,” the IGP leader said, adding that there is a great need to vigorously defend the rights of those who depend on the rivers.
