NEW DELHI, INDIA: Today is the anniversary of the adoption of our historic Global Greens Charter signed into being in 2001. The Global Greens Day i.e. 16th of April celebrates the vision, solidarity and ambition that went into this document.
On this day, the India Greens Party – IGP — expresses its solidarity with the Australian Greens, former Senator and eminent environmentalist Bob Brown and the Greens the world over by supporting the Stop Adani Convoy, being led by Mr Brown. We know that the Convoy is scheduled to depart on Wednesday 17th of April 2019 from Hobar, Australia and travel 5000+kms up the east coast of Australia with a number of events along the way. We know well that the aim of the Convoy is to bring national and international attention to the proposed Adani mega coal mine, during the national election period.
We know that more than 2000 people have already enquired to be part of the Convoy. The IGP’s physical presence at the Convoy is not possible but mentally, morally, ethically, principally and ideologically the party is with the Convoy and the Australian Greens. The IGP is saying this because the Indians are also part of the global community and as members of that community we feel obliged to support the Convoy.
The IGP’s good wishes for the success of the Convoy in the places like Hobart, Melbourne, Albury, Sydney, Coffs Harbour, Mullumbimby, Brisbane, Yeppoon, Airlie Beach, Mackay, the Galilee Basin and Canberra.
On this occasion, IGP wishes to share that Adani conglomerate also has plans to ruin great forests in the state of Chhattisgarh of India to dig their coal mine there. IGP has decided to oppose the project.
Regrettably, the Government of India has given environmental clearance for open cast coal mining in Parsa in Chhattisgarh’s dense Hasdeo Arand forests, in a decision that could have far-reaching consequences for forest cover conservation in India. Hasdeo Arand is one of the largest contiguous stretches of very dense forest in central India, spanning about 170,000 hectares. Parsa is one of the 30 coal blocks in Hasdeo Arand. The mine has a capacity of five metric tonnes per annum (MPTA). It will be operated by Rajasthan Collieries Limited (RCL), a unit of Adani Enterprises Limited.
In a nutshell, the IGP is determined to oppose Adani in India, in Australia or anywhere else in the world! We cannot allow these hungry, greedy and irresponsible corporations and multinational companies to ruin the Earth and the future!
We also call on the Australian voters to keep Adani and climate change on their minds as they go to the ballot box on 18 May 2019.
