The party came into formal existence as India Greens on 18 November 2018 when around 300 people from so many states took part in the founding national convention in New Delhi on 17 & 18 November 2018. On the concluding day of the convention on 18 November 2018 the convention proposed, endorsed and adopted the new party’s constitution including preamble, objective and principles, and policies. The convention also elected a national executive of the party. After this, the party applied for its registration with the Election Commission of India (ECI).

The idea about the India Greens was initiated on 2 July 2017 when more than 44 social and political activists, journalists and other people from 17 states and union territories of India were part of a meeting in New Delhi. Everybody was of the view that India needed a Green party that worked at the national level.

What about the future expansion of iGP work in India?
The iGP leadership is very hopeful about the vertical, horizontal and exponential expansion of the party in the near future. Green Politics will be the only politics to reckon with in the future because there will be no place for the run-of-the-mill politics in India or elsewhere. In fact, there has to be a paradigm shift in politics and only Green Politics can do that.
Is there any relationship between the iGP and any other political party in India?
The iGP does not have formal relationship with any other political party, or affiliation with any other Ideology. However, it will forge relationships, associations and affiliations with the Green parties in the country. There are few organisations which claim to be Green but in reality either they are dysfunctional or not pursuing Green Politics truthfully.
How is the progress of green party in India and its works?
Several people over the years have tried on this. Some of us also tried in the past to build a national Green party. However, nothing could be realised as there was no action on the ground. Today, there are hundreds of civil society organisations and actors who keep talking about Greenism but hardly come forth to practice Green Politics and Ideology. Their NGO interests do not allow them to get politically active. In fact, we require thinking beyond such interests. In a nutshell, Green Politics is progressing in India slowly and steadily.
Is iGP a national party?
The India Greens Party (https://indiagreensparty.org/principles/) is not a national party from the perspective of the Election Commission of India because for such attributes, a political party is required to meet certain electoral criteria. However, the iGP not only characterises its name but also works at the national level. Its constitution (https://indiagreensparty.org/constitution/), principles (https://indiagreensparty.org/principles/) and policies (https://indiagreensparty.org/policies/) are very much national in nature and character. The perspective of the party is Local to Global. Right now, the iGP has footprints in most states/union territories of the country. Also, it has national office bearers with a National Executive Committee and National Council representing most states and union territories of the country (https://indiagreensparty.org/who-we-are/office-bearers-india-greens/).
Is iGP a recognised Indian political party?
No, iGP is not a recognised Indian political party. To get the status of a recognised political party in India, a party has to win a certain number of seats and certain percentage of votes in the elections to the Lok Sabha (Lower House of National Parliament) or to the State Assemblies. The iGP has not contested any election so far; hence, no question of getting recognition from the ECI.

Green Politics
Tell us more about Green Politics in India and how it will run?
Green Politics in India is in a nascent state right now. So many people and activists have been saying about the Green values and principles over the years but hardly any of them was forthcoming to bring for all that in the shape of Green Politics till the time Mr Suresh Nautiyal, Founder-President of the India Greens Party, brought Green Politics in the mainstream of India’s political spectrum in the first decade of the 21st Century. Now in the wake of climate emergency due to global warming, people need a paradigm shift in their political thinking and get associated with Green Politics and Ideology, and the India Greens Party. Also, we need peace, non-violence, sustainability, co-existence, social-political-economic parity and equality. We require the ecological wisdom and environmental consciousness to sustain and thrive. All this will come with the Green Politics only. One thing is very clear that the future belongs to the Green Politics and believe us, the Greens are the future.
What kind of politics is needed in India?
India is a democratic and secular country. The State does not have any religion here. The iGP believes in these values and strives to make India a Participatory and Proportional Democracy.
What is Green Politics?
Green Politics is very simple. It is like any other organism. The beauty of Green Philosophy lies in its simplicity. Green Politics has evolved over the years quite organically without being overloaded with intellectual and academic discourses. But, of course, an Ideology and commitments are there. The point is that one does not have to learn the nuances of a complex and mind-boggling political theory to get to the thick of the Green Politics and its Ideology. In Green Politics, you need to know very simple things that –
- there has to be ecological wisdom and environmental consciousness
- there has to be sustainability
- there has to be participatory democracy
- there has to be cultural and politico-economic justice and parity
- there has to be social and gender justice
- there has to be equal rights for all and respect for human rights
- there has to be non-violence in all spheres of life, etc.
These principles are very simple and one does not need to be “academically” and “intellectually” learned to understand all these attributes. It is because these values come to us all quite naturally and organically. In simple words, Green Politics is based on natural good, and by the ordinary people, for the ordinary people!
