IGP wins both Councillor & Member positions on APGF Council; gets Deputy Treasurer seat as well
New Delhi, 14 September 2020: The India Greens Party (IGP) has got both the Councillor and Member positions on the Asia Pacific Greens Federation (APGF) Council.
In a press release issued here today, the IGP International Secretary Michael Rajchandra said that the APGF Council in its online meeting on Monday 13 September 2020 took a unanimous decision to this effect.
These positions are for one year and will come into force after the Annual General Meeting of the APGF Council in October 2020.
Mr Rajchandra said that the APGF Council was bound to take a decision on this issue before the next Annual General Meeting.
Each country sends one Councillor to the APGF Council; however, an election is imminent in case more than one Green party exists in a country and they fail to evolve consensus on these two positions. In the case of India, another Green party has been holding these positions for the last several years.
The IGP was formally founded on 18 November 2018 and it applied for Full Membership of the APGF Council only after it was registered as a political party by the Election Commission of India on 18 July 2019 and it got Full Membership of the APGF in November 2019.
Mr Rajchandra said that the IGP Women’s Network Convener Ms Mahima Bhardwaj was also elected as new Deputy Treasurer of the APGF.
The IGP President Suresh Nautiyal has thanked the APGF Council as well as all Councillors from different countries of the Asia Pacific region to express their faith and trust in the IGP by electing it to both the positions – Councillor and Member.
Being elected as Councillor to the APGF Council, means that the IGP Councillor will take part in the APGF Council’s monthly meetings with full voting rights. And being elected to the Member position will mean that the IGP Delegate will vote in the AGM of the APGF in 2021.
Mr Rajchandra said the IGP remains committed to ensure gender equity in the APGF Council. “In fact, Mr Suresh Nautiyal played a key role when the APGF Women’s Network was being evolved and ensured that the women were adequately represented in the APGF Council,” the IGP International Secretary added.
The IGP President said the party’s Councillor on the APGF Council will make relentless efforts to make the APGF Council more gender balanced. Also, the party will try to have more and more non-males in APGF’s other bodies. “Without gender equity, the targets of participatory democracy are hard to achieve,” Mr Nautiyal pointed out.
Mr Rajchandra said the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) of the party will soon appoint its Councillor on the APGF Council.
