IGP forms Kerala Working Group to take party work forward in the state

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, 12 September 2020: The India Greens Party (IGP) has constituted the party’s Working Group in Kerala to take the party work forward by forming an Ad-hoc Committee and eventually electing the State Executive.

The IGP Kerala Working Group consists of Shanavas Aluva, Ms Nazeema AK, Shiburaj AK, and Prabhath Prabhakaran.

The working Group has been authorised to recruit more people, especially women in it.

In a press statement issued here, the IGP Spokesperson for South India, Baburaj Palladan, said that a decision to this effect was taken in an online meeting on Sunday 12 September 2020.

The online meeting was presided over by the IGP National President Suresh Nautiyal and moderated by the party’s Vice-President Anita Nautiyal. Besides the party members from Kerala, party’s central leaders Secretary-General Rehana Siddiqui and International Secretary Michael Rajchandra also took part in the meeting.

Mr Nautiyal said that emergence of Green Politics was indispensable for an ecologically sensitive state like Kerala. “The India Greens Party will do its best to address the environmental and ecological issues in the state,” the Green leader pointed out.

Mr Shanavas Aluva took the responsibility to contact the Green Movement groups in the state and persuade them to join the mainstream Green Politics. Before this, the party will create a digital welcome kit for the potential members. This kit will have information regarding Green Politics and genesis of the IGP, etc.

The Working Group has agreed to form the Kerala State Ad-hoc Committee of the India Greens Party soon so that concrete steps are taken for holding the state convention and electing the State Executive.

The Group decided to send Ms Nazeema AK to the Women’s Network of the party. She will be nominated as Executive Member in the IGP Women’s Network after the Network clears her name for the post.

Mr Shanavas Aluva informed the meeting that the Gender Equity policy of the party has already been translated into the Malayalam language and steps would be taken to translate other party policies in the Malayalam language.

Party’s constitution will also be translated into the Malayalam language.

The Kerala Working Group will have its online outreach meeting on 4 October 2020. The Groups has decided to hold weekly check-ins so that the work is expedited appropriately.

The Working Group will also initiate campaigns in the state. For now, it is considering campaigning against the Environment Impact Assessment-2020 draft of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) in the state and bringing the movement groups together.

It is to be noted here that the India Greens Party on 19 April 2020 had written to the MoEFCC Secretary objecting to the stipulated time-frame for finalising the Environment Impact Assessment-2020 draft. The IGP had also asked the central government to put a fresh draft in public domain too after the lockdown was totally over. The party made it clear to the government that the EIA-2020 draft was an attempt to skirt around all the major decisions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) over the past few years.

Subsequently, on 12 August 2020, the IGP requested the MoEFCC Minister Prakash Javadekar to withdraw the EIA-2020 draft as it did not acknowledge the best global practices. The party also pointed out that the EIA-2020 draft was regressive as it aimed at approving projects more than assessing them.
