IGP says total elimination of nuclear weapons only answer
New Delhi, 29 August 2020: The India Greens Party (IGP) has appealed to the nuclear powers to dismantle their nuclear weapons and focus on non-violence and world peace.
In his message on the occasion of the International Day Against Nuclear Tests today, the IGP President Suresh Nautiyal said the nuclear disarmament and total elimination of nuclear weapons are the only absolute guarantee against the use or threat of nuclear weapons.
On 2 December 2009, the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly declared 29 August as the International Day Against Nuclear Tests by unanimously adopting a resolution calling for increasing awareness and education “about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions and the need for their cessation as one of the means of achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.”
Mr Nautiyal said the Day is devoted to furthering the objective of the total elimination of nuclear weapons, through mobilisation of international efforts; however, it is sad that the nuclear powers are not worried about the devastating effects of the nuclear testing on human and other life forms.
“The situation remains the same since nuclear weapons testing began on 16 July 1945 and it is sad that nearly 2,000 nuclear tests have taken place till date,” he pointed out.
The IGP said history has shown us the terrifying and tragic effects of nuclear weapons testing.
Mr Nautiyal pointed out that several bilateral and multilateral governmental level developments as well as broad movements in civil society have helped to advance the cause of banning nuclear tests; but not much has been done to stop the nuclear testing.
The IGP leader reminded that the main mechanism for eradicating nuclear weapons testing was the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) and the time was ripe that all countries of the world ratified it and ensured implementation of it.
“However, nothing can play as crucial a role in avoiding a nuclear war or nuclear terrorist threat as the total elimination of nuclear weapons,” the IGP leader concluded.
