The India Greens Party (iGP) today said there is a great need to make the best efforts for soil conservation as soil and water provide the foundation for food production, ecosystems, and human wellbeing.
The party said it is important to recognise the invaluable roles of soil and water, and take proactive measures to safeguard these resources for future generations.
The iGP said there is an urgent need to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems and human well-being by addressing the growing challenges in soil management, increasing soil awareness and encouraging societies to improve soil health.
The party said the salt-affected soils have a decreased ability to act as a buffer and filter against pollutants. Therefore, the governments need to halt soil salinisation and sodification which are major soil degradation processes threatening ecosystem and are known as being among the most important problems at a global level for agricultural production, food security and sustainability in arid and semi-arid regions.
Soil salinisation breaks down our soils and reduces their ability to help our food grow. Salt-affected soils reduce both the ability of crops to take up water and the availability of micronutrients. They also concentrate ions that are toxic to plants and may degrade the soil structure.
