INDIA GREENS PARTY
Press Release
Unchir-Dunktok, Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, 31 August 2021: The India Greens Party (iGP) today requested the Haryana State Pollution Control Board to stop the waste-to-energy plant at Bandhwari Landfill Site in the eco-sensitive Aravalli Hills in the NCR.
In a petition addressed to Chairman of the Haryana Pollution Control Board, and sent through email today, the iGP President Suresh Nautiyal said the Board has plans to expand capacity of the waste-to-energy plant at Bandhwari Landfill Site in the middle of the Aravalli Forest from 15 MW to 25 MW.
“We understand, the plan is to burn the entire 2000 tons of mixed waste of Gurugram and Faridabad cities in this waste-to-energy plant. However, the project will tremendously increase air and water pollution for the entire National Capital Region and impact the lives of millions and millions of the NCR residents,” said Mr Nautiyal.
The iGP leader pointed out, there are already three waste-to-energy plants operating in Delhi which are polluting way beyond permissible limits. A fourth such plant is being planned in Tuglaqabad and fifth one at Bandhwari which is right in the middle of the Aravalli Forest.
“It is quite evident that the Bandhwari Landfill is already playing havoc in the eco-sensitive Aravalli Hills along with the impacts on the health of people living nearby. Therefore, the decision to go ahead with this project to make a waste-to-energy plant in the Aravalli Hills will be a disastrous one for India’s National Capital Region which is already reeling under the impacts of severe air pollution,” added the Green leader.
“Therefore, the iGP requests the Haryana Pollution Control Board to not go ahead with the upcoming waste-to-energy plant and its proposed expansion at Bandhwari Landfill Site,” said Mr Nautiyal, adding that it is party’s strong belief that there will be better ideas about managing the waste of the Gurugram and Faridabad cities based on decentralised waste management.
