Global Greens Day: Call for Urgent Green Action in India

INDIA GREENS PARTY

Press Release

Issued at New Delhi on 16 April 2025

Today, as Greens around the world come together to mark Global Greens Foundation Day, we, as India Greens Party, reaffirm our commitment to the core Green values of ecological wisdom, social justice, participatory democracy, non-violence, sustainability, and respect for diversity.

These principles are not just ideals – they are urgent imperatives for our survival on a planet pushed to the brink.

Our living planet – the only home we have – is in grave danger. From rising temperatures to collapsing ecosystems, the consequences of unchecked human activities are everywhere. Global greenhouse gas emissions continue to surge, biodiversity is vanishing, forests are being cleared, oceans are choking on plastic, and water sources are drying up.

The Earth’s warning signals are loud and clear – yet political leadership, especially in India under the Modi government, continues to prioritise profits over the planet, growth over green, and short-term power over long-term sustainability.

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rule, India has witnessed an alarming assault on the environment:

  • Dilution of environmental laws and fast-tracking of industrial and mining clearances in ecologically sensitive areas;
  • Deforestation at an unprecedented scale, particularly in tribal and forest-dwelling regions;
  • Suppression of environmental activists, scientists, and indigenous voices who dare to speak for nature;
  • Promotion of an extractive economic model, with coal and corporate-led development at its core; and,
  • An utter disregard for the principles of climate justice, where the poorest communities pay the highest price for environmental degradation they did not cause.

On this day, the India Greens Party calls upon all Indians – especially the youth – to rise in defence of our natural heritage, our air, water, forests, and wildlife. India’s strength lies not in cement and concrete but in the resilience of its ecosystems and communities that live in harmony with nature.

We demand that the Indian government:

  1. Declare a climate and ecological emergency, and act accordingly.
  2. Reinstate and strengthen environmental regulations and institutions.
  3. Prioritise a just transition to renewable energy and regenerative agriculture, and restoration of natural habitats, protecting workers and vulnerable communities.
  4. Uphold the rights of indigenous peoples and frontline defenders of the environment.
  5. Invest in green public transport, sustainable agriculture, and eco-centric education.

The future is Green – but only if we make it so.

“Let Global Greens Day be not just a celebration, but a clarion call for action. Let this Foundation Day remind us why we began this journey – to build an India where development means living in balance with nature, not in conflict with it,” pointed out Mr Kailash Anerao, Co-President of the India Greens Party, adding that the party’s commitment For People, For Planet, and For Future Generations remains intact.
