INDIA GREENS PARTY
Press Statement
Issued at iGP NHO Greendham, Uttarakhand-246194 on 22 September 2024
The India Greens Party (iGP) today accepted resignation of its Co-President, Prabhath Prabhakaran, who was replaced by Kailash Anerao, a party leader from Maharashtra and a prominent Green campaigner.
The iGP, in its Political Affairs Committee (PAC) meeting today made the unanimous decision after achieving the quorum. Mr Prabhakaran, a party leader from Kerala had put in his papers on 20 September 2024. He has also resigned from the Primary Membership of the party. After accepting his resignation, Kailash Anerao was unanimously appointed and elected as new Co-President of the party. Anerao will continue in this role till biennial election is held in November 2025.
In his acceptance speech, Kailash Anerao said, his first and foremost priority would be to focus on strengthening the party membership, and then move ahead from there.
The party also accepted resignation of the party Treasurer Ashish Thakuri who was moving abroad for his higher studies. Due to these resignations, changes have also been made in the national committees, the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the National Council (NC) of the party.
In his resignation, Mr Prabhath Prabhakaran said that he was resigning from the Co-Presidentship and Primary Membership of the party due to unavoidable personal reasons, which have compelled him to make the difficult decision.
“This is a well-thought-out decision and there is no room for reconsideration. I have talked to our Founder, Patron and Mentor (Suresh Nautiyal), and explained to him the circumstances that led to this decision. I request the PAC to accept my resignation in the next PAC meeting. I extend my deepest gratitude to the Founder for his trust in me and for his invaluable guidance and support. His vision and selfless leadership have been a constant source of inspiration. I also wish to thank all my fellow Green colleagues for their unwavering support, camaraderie, and collaborative spirit during my association with the party. Your dedication to the green cause is truly commendable.
“I am proud of the progress we have made together, to herald green politics in India, by adhering to the six core green principles. Though I am stepping down from politics, my commitment to these principles remains permanent. I am glad to have had the opportunity to lead the party at a time when we contested the Lok Sabha election despite the lack of sufficient funds and organisational strength to successfully preserve our status as a registered political party. I wish the India Greens Party continued success and growth, and I have no doubt that the party will remain a powerful voice for Green Politics in India. Thank you once again for the opportunity to serve the cause of Green Politics,” he said in his resignation letter.
In return, the PAC members praised Prabhakaran for his role despite his personal compulsions.
“He will remain a guiding force for the party in the times to come. He was one of the most enlightened members in the India Greens Party, whom we will miss fondly,” the PAC members said. Founder-Patron-Mentor, Suresh Nautiyal, said it was sad that Prabhath Prabhakaran and Ashish Thakuri have decided to resign from their respective roles.
In his resignation, Treasurer Ashish Thakuri said: “Dear PAC member, I am writing to inform you of my resignation from the position of Treasurer for the party, effective 27 August 2024. Due to my forthcoming move to Europe for the long term, I find that I will be unable to dedicate the necessary time and energy to fulfil this role to the best of my ability. It is essential that someone who can commit fully to this position takes over. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the party Founder, Suresh Nautiyal, for his trust and guidance throughout my term. One of the highlights of my tenure was representing the India Greens Party at the Global Greens Congress in Incheon South Korea in 2023, an experience I deeply value. I also wish to extend my apologies to anyone I may have inadvertently offended during my term. While I will step down from my role in the PAC, I would like to remain an active member of the India Greens Party and contribute in any capacity I can. Thank you for your understanding and support.”
In the meanwhile, the India Greens Party approved the Terms of Reference (ToR) for GAIA (Green Action Initiative Alliance), which was approved in the last PAC meeting in August. This initiative was proposed by Prabhath Prabhakaran while being the Co-President of the party.
According to the ToR of GAIA, the alliance will be formed in association with other Green organisations and individuals. It aims to bring together diverse stakeholders to promote Green activism and sustainability. The Governing Council of it will comprise of 10 members, with five members from India Greens Party, and five from outside the party. Out of these 10 members, five will be women. And, one of the Co-Conveners will also be a woman. Ms Shivani Bhatt (Convener of the iGPWN) and Prabhath Prabhakaran (a civil society member) have been appointed Co-Conveners of the GAIA.
