iGP for peaceful and democratic transition in Bangladesh

INDIA GREENS PARTY

Press Statement

Issued at iGP NHO Greendham, Uttarakhand on 10 August 2024

The India Greens Party (iGP) today emphasised the need for a peaceful and truly democratic transition of power in the neighbouring country of Bangladesh after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation.

The iGP thinks that the formation of an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus is a hopeful step forward but the road ahead seems tricky if not handled with the political acumen.

The students’ agitation that might have started as an organic protest against an authoritarian government, now seems to be influenced by internal and external vested interests, considering the large-scale of violence.

The resentment against the dictatorial ways of Sheikh Hasina has regrettably turned against the legacy of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who brought freedom to Bangladesh. There is a serious risk of religious fundamentalist forces exploiting the political vacuum.

Reports of the large-scale vandalisation are also pouring in. There are reports that even the statues of the Father of the Nation, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, have not been spared. In any civilised society, such acts are not acceptable.

In view of the critical political situation in Bangladesh, the iGP points out the following steps that are necessary.

1. End of violence: End all forms of violence, intimidation, and aggression, allowing for a tranquil transition.

2. Smooth handover: Facilitate a smooth and peaceful handover of power from the interim government to a democratically elected new government eventually, adhering to the democratic principles and the rule of law.

3. Inclusive Dialogue: Encourage broad-based discussions among political parties, civil society, and other stakeholders to address grievances and create a harmonious future.

4. Protection of Human Rights: Safeguard citizens’ rights, especially that of vulnerable populations and religions minorities, and ensure accountability for any human rights violations. In any civilised society or nation, the minorities must not feel threatened.

5. Regional Support: Support and cooperation from neighbouring countries, including India, to foster peace, stability, and collaboration will be beneficial.

The India Greens Party calls upon the Government of India to initiate diplomatic efforts to take the interim government of Bangladesh into confidence and allay any misgivings caused by Ms Sheikh Hasina’s stay in the country.

The party stands in solidarity with the people of Bangladesh, advocating for a serene, democratic, and sustainable transition towards a truly democratic future.
