INDIA GREENS PARTY
Press Statement
Unchir-Dunktok, Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, 26 September 2021: The India Greens Party (iGP) today said total elimination of the nuclear weapons will lead to lasting peace and sustainability in the world.
In a press statement here at the party’s national head office, on the occasion of the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons today, the iGP President Suresh Nautiyal said it is a sad story that the countries possessing nuclear weapons have not taken concrete steps to eliminate these despite the fact that achieving global nuclear disarmament was one of the oldest goals of the United Nations.
Mr Nautiyal pointed out that it was the subject of the General Assembly’s first resolution in 1946 with a mandate to make specific proposals for the control of nuclear energy and the elimination of atomic weapons and all other major weapons adaptable to mass destruction; but the goal has not been realised after so many decades.
He said the slow pace of nuclear disarmament has led to frustration among the sane countries and the people.
The iGP President said the Day provides an occasion for the world community to reaffirm its commitment to global nuclear disarmament as a priority, and provides an opportunity to educate the public and their leaders about the real benefits of eliminating such weapons.
The UN General Assembly declared the International Day in December 2013 as a follow-up to the high-level meeting of the General Assembly on nuclear disarmament held on 26 September 2013. The International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons has been observed annually since 2014.
Despite all this, around 13,080 nuclear weapons remain today. Countries possessing such weapons have well-funded, long-term plans to modernise their nuclear arsenals. More than half of the world’s population still lives in countries that either have such weapons or are members of nuclear alliances. In addition, no nuclear disarmament negotiations are currently underway.
