Int’l Day against Nuclear Tests: No future if nukes continue to exist, says iGP

INDIA GREENS PARTY

Press Statement

Unchir-Dunktok, Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, 29 August 2021: The India Greens Party (iGP) today said there will be no future for humans and other living being if nuclear weapons and energy continue to exist.

In a press statement on the International Day against Nuclear Tests today, the iGP President Suresh Nautiyal said nuclear disarmament and total elimination of nuclear weapons are the only absolute guarantee against the use or threat of nuclear weapons.

“It is the hope that one day all nuclear weapons will be eliminated. Until then, there is a need to observe International Day against Nuclear Tests as the world works towards promoting peace and security,” the Green leader pointed out.

On 2 December 2009, the United Nations General Assembly declared 29 August the International Day against Nuclear Tests unanimously.

Year 2010 marked the inaugural commemoration of the International Day against Nuclear Tests.

Mr nautiyal said the International Day against Nuclear Tests is here to foster a global environment that strongly advocates for a world free of nuclear weapons.

He said it is sad that over 2,000 tests have taken place since nuclear weapons testing began on 16 July 1945.

In the early days of nuclear testing little consideration was given to its devastating effects on human life, let alone the dangers of nuclear fallout from atmospheric tests. But now, the situation has become really grim. The nuclear tests have shown us the terrifying and tragic effects of nuclear weapons testing.

The iGP President said there is a need for increasing awareness and education about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions and the need for their cessation as one of the means of achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world, adding that the bodies like research institutes, academic institutions and NGOs are required to get engaged in disarmament-related work.

Issued by Deepak Dabral, iGP Office Secretary.
