INDIA GREENS PARTY

Press Statement
The India Greens Party (iGP) today expressed shock and anguish over the Delhi Police’s attempts to stop We20 Assembly in New Delhi yesterday.
The party said it is regrettable that attempts were made to stop a peaceful assembly of democratic people in the national capital of the country.
In an unbelievable step, the Delhi Police barricaded the gates to HKS Surjeet Bhawan in Delhi, the venue of the 3-day programme, not letting anyone in around 11 am.
Even as multiple sessions were underway at the venue, as part of the 3-day We20 programme, a forum where representatives of people’s movements, trade union, civil society, were gathered to discuss and debate the implications of Modi government, a large battalion of Delhi Police swept into the venue demanding the seminar be shut down.
None of the participants agreed, demanded the police leave and also ensure the seminar participants’ fundamental right to meet and discuss public concerns is protected. All scheduled sessions continued smoothly with enthusiastic participation from over 400 participants despite the attempt to halt the programme.
We, at the India Greens Party, believe that it was an attack on the seminar and democracy, and wonder whether this is the message Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to convey to the G20 nations, that India is a country that does not even allow a seminar to be held.
In the meanwhile, the India Greens party also supports the Peoples’20 assembly scheduled in New Delhi on 23-24 August 2023. It is a global network and initiative comprising civil society actors and organisations that voluntarily engage with the G20 summit and related processes. As a coalition of civil society organisations, People’20 strives to ensure that the voices of marginalised and excluded communities and peoples are heard and reflected in international decision-making processes within the G20.
