Petition to the Japanese Ambassador in India

INDIA GREENS PARTY

12 August 2023

To

Mr Satoshi Suzuki,

Ambassador in India,

Embassy of Japan,

Shantipath, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi-110021. INDIA.

Statement: “India Greens Party (iGP) calls for the suspension of plans to discharge contaminated treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Power Plant into the Pacific Ocean.”

Your Excellency,

Greetings from the India Greens party!

The India Greens Party is a pan-India Green political party, registered with the Election Commission of India as a political organisation. We are committed to raising political awareness about the issues related to ecological wisdom, sustainability, social justice, participatory democracy, nonviolence and respect for diversity.

Here, in this Petition, we demand the following regarding the plan to discharge radioactive treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the Pacific Ocean, in accordance with the resolution adopted at the 5th Global Greens Congress in Korea, June 8-11, 2023, where Green Parties from 84 countries gathered.

1. In order to protect the health of the people of Japan, the Pacific region and the Pacific Rim, and the environment and biodiversity of the Pacific Ocean, we call for the immediate suspension of plans to discharge approximately 1.33 million tons of treated water contaminated by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the Pacific Ocean.

2. Demand disclosure of information on the total amount of radioactive materials. In addition to the estimated amount of tritium, we demand an explanation of the types and total amount of radioactive materials other than tritium, which TEPCO has explained will be filtered by ALPS through secondary treatment, diluted with sea water and kept below the regulatory standard.

3. Call for the cancelation of the plan of oceanic discharge and the continuous storage of contaminated treated water on land. For this purpose, we call for consideration of proven methods such as “large seismically isolated tank storage” and “mortar solidification disposal”.

4. Call for respect for international treaties that seek to prohibit the dumping of radioactive waste and other radioactive materials into the Pacific Ocean.

With Green wishes,

Suresh Nautiyal
