INDIA GREENS PARTY
Issued at iGP NHO at Greendham Anandi-Chait, Unchir-Dunktok, Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand on 12 August 2023.
Press Release
The India Greens Party (iGP) today called upon the Japanese ambassador in India to request their government to suspend the plans to discharge contaminated treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Power Plant into the Pacific Ocean.
In a petition to the Japan ambassador, Satoshi Suzuki, to India, the party demanded compliance from the Japanese government regarding the plan to discharge radioactive treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the Pacific Ocean.
The iGP reminded the ambassador that the 5th Global Greens Congress in South Korea during 8-11 June this year, also passed a resolution to this effect.
The party said the plans to discharge the contaminated treated water from Fukushima Daiichi power plant must be suspended immediately in order to protect the health of the people of Japan, the Pacific region and the Pacific Rim.
The party said the environment and biodiversity of the Pacific Ocean has been impacted due to this plant. In view of this, the India Greens Party calls for immediate suspension of the plans to discharge approximately 1.33 million tons of treated water contaminated by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the Pacific Ocean.
Also, the iGP demands disclosure of information on the total amount of radioactive materials. In addition to the estimated amount of tritium, we demand an explanation of the types and total amount of radioactive materials other than tritium, which TEPCO has explained will be filtered by ALPS through secondary treatment, diluted with sea water and kept below the regulatory standard.
The India Greens Party also calls for the cancelation of the plan of oceanic discharge and the continuous storage of contaminated treated water on land. For this purpose, we call for consideration of proven methods such as large seismically isolated tank storage and mortar solidification disposal.
Besides, we, at the India Greens Party, call for respect for international treaties that seek to prohibit the dumping of radioactive waste and other radioactive materials into the Pacific Ocean.
–Issued by the iGP Chief Spokesperson Suresh Nautiyal.
